Building Bridges

This summer Urban Realm takes a close look at the role architects play in bridge design with a look at some of the finest recent examples to ease our paths from A to B. From the Renfrew Bridge over the River Clyde to the Gairnshiel Bridge on Deeside, we look at how bridge design is being utilised as a regeneration shortcut by hugging communities close.

  • Scottish Design Awards
Scotland’s architecture and design communities have ushered in a new golden age at the Scottish Design Awards on the back of an all-time high volume of entries. We’ve collected all the architecture winners together, along with some choice quotes from our judges, to commemorate the moment.
  • Stenhouse Mansion
Leslie Howson reveals the fascinating story of Stenhouse Mansion, a historically important building under the custodianship of the National Trust that goes largely unnoticed by passers-by.
  • Renfrew Bridge
A new crossing on the River Clyde has put a swing in the step of Renfrew and Yoker by opening up new opportunities for travel, but does it signify that a part of the city that has long been treading water is now going places? Urban Realm travels to the riverfront to get both sides of the story.
  • Cultural Formation
Roger Emmerson looks at the rise and demise of architecture as a tool of cultural formation, addressing how a simplistic return to local forms on neo-vernacular grounds, despite some superficial appeal, is destined to fail as it carries too many messages at one time.
  • Landscape Architecture
Urban Realm returns with a bird’s-eye view of landscape architecture, offering different perspectives on biodiversity, wellbeing and the social benefits of green space. In a world consumed with talk of AI and the artificiality that comes with it, the backlash is real. We speak to landscape architects who are reclaiming reality.
  • Three Bridges
The opening of Moxon’s new Bridge at Gairnshiel on Deeside prompts Mark Chalmers to investigate the wider role of infrastructure in tying Deeside together. Amidst concern that two bridges further downstream at Aboyne and Dinnet are reaching the end of their design lives, are communities in danger of being cut off?
  • Retrofit Renaissance
In the heart of Florence, Italy, an 18th-century palace hides a high-tech secret following the installation of concealed sensors to monitor structural integrity and resilience to environmental challenges. We look behind the walls of Palazzo Poniatowskiguadagni to see how historic buildings can embrace the future.
